Brisbane Roller Derby: Sun State Roller Girls' First Bout for 2010 Sat Mar 13 @qldrollerderby

One of Brisbane's three Roller Derby leagues, the Sun State Roller Girls, are putting on their first bout for 2010 this Saturday, March 13 at the Beenleigh Sports Arena - see below for a link to a map.

The March 13 bout is between the Licorice Short Shorts and the Golden Roughs - this YouTube video by vetusastrum shows a bout between the Shorts and the Roughs in 2008:

You can buy tickets online for $12.50 (including booking fee) for adults or $10.50 (including booking fee) for Student or Pension card holders - just click here. Tickets at the door are $15 for adults and $12 concession. There are market stalls, food and liquor available, but bring cash as there's no EFTPOS or ATMs at the arena.

Brisbane protest against planned 2am nightclub lockout - Thu 11 March 4pm Parliament House @qldlockedout

The Queensland Locked Out organisation is holding a protest rally to let politicians and the public know that they're against the idea of locking people out of nightclubs at 2am closing ALL licenced venues at 2am,  The proposal for a 2am lockout closure comes from the Queensland Police Union, in their submission (pdf file - scroll to page 73) to the Inquiry into Alcohol-Related Violence being held by the Law, Justice and Safety Committee of the Queensland Parliament.

Queensland Locked Out has countered with other proposals to deal with what it says is the major social issue of "extreme violence" on Brisbane streets. QLO's proposals include harsher penalties for anti-social and aggressive behaviour, more police and security guards, ID scanners to keep a record of patrons entering nightclubs and other licenced premises, and chillout areas to be set up in entertainment districts.

There's already a 3am lockout - meaning if you leave a nightclub after 3am you can't get back in. The 3am lockout has been in place since 2005. The current lock-out does not apply to the Treasury Casino. The Treasury Casino is owned by Tabcorp, and the Queensland Government-owned QIC was the tenth-biggest shareholder in Tabcorp as of August 2009.

A trial of a 2am lockout in Victoria in 2008 ended after 3 months. This video shows Australian Greens member (and candidate for the seat of Melbourne in this year's Federal Election) Adam Bandt speaking against Victoria's lockout at a protest rally in Melbourne:

Brisbane Anime Society screening Sat Mar 7 at QUT Gardens Point, City @basanime

The Brisbane Anime Society is having a screening this Sunday March 7 at QUT Gardens Point campus. The screening starts at 4pm and goes to 8pm, and it costs $3 - only $2 if you're a member of the BAS; you can sign up as a member at the screening for $10. The screening is in D Block - see below for a link to a Google Map showing how to get there.

So, if you've just joined Twitter you may be be wondering exactly what all the fuss is about. People use Twitter in lots of different ways, but the main way I use it is to meet other people in Brisbane. Brisbane has a thriving community on Twitter, and once a month there's a big meet-up called a btub.

The next btub is tomorrow night, Friday March 5th 2010, at Greystone Bar, Southbank.

btub stands for "Brisbane Twitter Underground Brigade" but it's not really underground any more, we have lots of people turn up. There's lots of interesting and friendly people to chat to so if you're free, drop in - if you want to chat with me, my photo's on the side of this blog (but I now have a goatee/mo). I'll be late (about 10pm) because I don't finish work till 9.30pm.

Brisbane Films - David Bowie and Led Zeppelin films at the Globe - FREE for @4zzz subscribers

There's some classic rock concerts being shown at the Globe Theatre in Fortitude Valley this week.

On Thursday March 4th 2010 there's a marathon of 4 different concert films of Led Zeppelin, starting at 7pm and going through to around midnight. The 4 concerts are:

Brisbane Impro: "Enid Blyton: By the Book" $10 at Brisbane Arts Theatre Sunday March 7 @artstheatre

Impro Mafia, who presented its third season of Prognosis: Death! in January, has a new one-night show coming up this Sunday: "Enid Blyton: By the Book".

Apparently, the idea is that Enid Blyton has a new dog, Oscar, and she wants to write a book about his adventures. Naturally, the book will contain the suggestions shouted out by the audience.

Tickets are $10, and the show is on at 7.30pm this Sunday, March 7 2010 the Brisbane Arts Theatre, 210 Petrie Terrace, Brisbane City.
