The Queensland Music Festival is on from July 17 to August 2 2009. There's events all over the state, but here I'll give you an idea of the free performances happening around Brisbane during the Festival.
Hidden Republic:
Friday July 17, 6pm, Brisbane Square, City (Click here for a Google Map)
The Black Arm Band (click here for their MySpace page) will perform their work Hidden Republic on Thursday Island, and the concert will be broadcast live and played on big screens in Brisbane Square, City, opposite George St from the top of the Queen Street Mall.
Acoustic in the Park
Sun July 19, 12 midday - 5pm, Rainforest Green, Southbank Parklands (just opposite the Suncorp Piazza - click here for a Google Map)
No details yet about who's playing, but this should be a relaxing afternoon of acoustic music.
Battle City: Hip Hop dance competition
Friday July 24, 6.30pm, Under the Turbot St Overpass, off Roma St, City (click here for a Google Map)
Hip Hop dancers compete for a $500 prize. The comp's MySpace page is here.

Francisco Lopez
Sun July 26, 7pm, Institute of Modern Art, Cnr Brunswick St and Berwick St, Fortitude Valley (click here for a Google Map)
Francisco Lopez (click here for his Wikipedia article) is an experimental musician/sound artist from Spain. At his performance you'll wear a blindfold so you can soak up everything he wants you to hear. The YouTube vid below, by matoki1964,shows one of Lopez' performances in Barcelona, Spain in 2000 (it starts about a minute and 40 seconds in):
Song Trails song-writing workshop

The Song Trails workshops will teach you how to write your own songs. They're free to get in, but you MUST register by July 10. You can register if you click here and fill out all your details. Once you've registered, you'll be sent an email telling you the exact address of the workshop.
Inside Music
Wed July 29, 1.05pm, Queensland Conservatorium, Southbank Parklands (click here for a Google Map)
Inside Music is a free lecture, demonstration and performance by Anthony Pateras, explaining what goes on when performers are getting ready for a show. There will be a question-and-answer session.

This is a free panel discussion between choreographers and composers sharing their ideas for how music and dance can work together today. It's free, but you have to book on

Song Trails Finale Concert

This concert has the musicians who helped people write songs in the Song Trails workshops all over Queensland perform those songs for us. They'll also be playing the songs they wrote while travelling to the different workshops.
Free music in the city and the airport
At different times during the Festival, there will be music in the City streets, at the airport, and other places. Click here to find out exactly when you'll be able to hear it.
